What makes a great massage therapist?
Is it knowing more techniques? Taking another course? Applying deeper pressure?
According to international massage educator Beata Aleksandrowicz, those things matter but, they aren't what truly transforms your treatments.

In this episode, we explore why touch itself is one of the most powerful therapeutic tools we have, how intention changes every treatment, and why your own personal growth may be the biggest factor in becoming an exceptional therapist.
Beata has spent more than 30 years training massage therapists around the world, developing signature spa treatments, teaching in luxury spas, and helping therapists build careers that are both meaningful and sustainable.

Together we discuss:
Why great therapists are developed and not born

The healing power of intentional touch
How to deepen your treatments without adding more techniquesWhy communication begins before your hands ever touch the client
Preventing exhaustion through self-awareness and recoveryThe importance of continuous education beyond manual skills Creating signature treatments that truly reflect who you areWhy massage therapists have never been more important than they are today

If you've ever felt like you're doing "all the right things" but want your treatments to feel more connected, more meaningful, and more impactful, this conversation is for you

TAKEAWAYS

Spend as much time developing yourself as your techniques.Technical skills are essential, but your communication, emotional intelligence, confidence and presence are what transform a good therapist into a great one.

Create intention before every treatment. Before you place your hands on a client, pause and ask yourself:
"What do I want this client to experience today?"
That small shift can completely change the quality of your treatment.

Build recovery into your workday.Five deep breaths.
A short stretch.
A mental reset between appointments.
Small recovery habits performed consistently create long, sustainable careers.

Review your week like you review your treatments.Instead of waiting until you're exhausted, ask yourself every week:
  • How was my energy?
  • Did I feel present?
  • What filled me up?
  • What drained me?
Reflection helps prevent problems before they become overwhelming.

Remember why you chose massage therapy.Reconnect with your purpose often.
Your "why" is one of the most powerful tools you have for creating a career filled with freedom, flexibility and joy.

Why Great Massage Therapists Go Beyond Technique
What makes a truly great massage therapist?

It's easy to assume the answer is learning more techniques, collecting certifications, or finding the next trending modality. While those things certainly have value, international massage educator Beata Aleksandrowicz believes they are only one piece of the puzzle.

Beata shares a perspective shaped by more than 30 years of teaching therapists around the world. Great massage therapy begins with technical skill, but it grows through intention, presence, communication, and personal development.

One of the biggest takeaways from this conversation is that every treatment starts before your hands ever touch the client. The language you use during your intake, the environment you create, and the genuine interest you show all contribute to a client's experience. As Beata reminds us, clients often remember how they felt during a treatment as much as the treatment itself.

We also explored career longevity. Rather than waiting until exhaustion forces a change, Beata encourages therapists to build regular recovery into their schedule through reflection, movement, breathing, and reconnecting with the reason they chose this profession. Sustainable careers are created through small, consistent habits rather than dramatic changes.

Finally, we discussed the idea of signature treatments. Rather than creating something simply because it's expected, Beata encourages therapists and spas to build treatments that genuinely reflect their values, their story, and the unique experience they want clients to have.

Action Steps
  • Reflect on why you became a massage therapist and revisit that purpose regularly.
  • Before your next treatment, set a clear intention for what you hope your client experiences.
  • Review your intake process and look for opportunities to create more meaningful conversations.
  • Schedule intentional recovery time between treatments, even if it's only a few deep breaths or a short stretch.
  • Choose continuing education that helps you grow as a therapist and as a person.

Beata is a powerful reminder that while techniques build competence, it's your presence, curiosity, and commitment to growth that leave a lasting impression on the people you treat. For massage therapists who want to build a fulfilling, long-term career, it's a conversation worth returning to again and again.
