Dear People-Pleasing Massage Therapist,
This episode is for the massage therapist who says yes when they want to say no. The one who stays late, over-explains, undercharges, and then wonders why they feel drained at the end of the week.
Today, we’re joined by Annette Montgomery. Annette is a massage therapist, micro business owner, and recovering people pleaser and she is ready to unpack something most therapists experience but rarely talk about honestly:
People-pleasing is not a personality trait. It’s a business strategy. And it backfires.
We get into the real, behind-the-scenes moments:
  • The “whispers” your business gives you before things feel off
  • What over-giving actually looks like in a treatment room
  • Why resentment is often a boundary that hasn’t been set yet
  • How scripts can support your nervous system (not make you robotic)
  • The identity shift from “nice” to professional
If you want a massage career that gives you freedom, flexibility, financial stability, and space for your life outside the clinic, this conversation is a must-listen.

Some fun facts: Cancer sun, Libra moon, Capricorn rising: Nurturing, guarded, idea generator, intuitive, needs safety, harmonious, professional fester-er of emotions, and generous with knowledge. Married. Child free by choice. Love to travel. Insatiable sweet tooth. Love watching TV & movies. Love planting things & being outside. I require a lot of alone time.

TAKEAWAYS
  1. Pay attention to the “whispers”
If you’re feeling tired before your shift or relieved by cancellations—that’s data.

  2. Name one boundary you’re avoiding
    That’s your next growth edge.

  3. Practice one sentence this week
Clear communication builds confidence through repetition.

  4. Audit your over-giving
Where are you staying late, over-explaining, or discounting?

  5. Reframe resentment
    It’s not failure—it’s information.

ABOUT

Massage Therapist + micro business owner since 2013, I'm a recovering people pleaser that's learned first hand that over-giving isn't sustainable. Connection and sharing knowledge have always been important to me. I started out offering up nuanced, straightforward advice in the free FB groups. And eventually that evolved into where I am today - holding space for my peers so they can say all their struggles out loud, to someone that gets it - and together create a plan to work through them.
A lot of what I do centers on healthy business boundaries, communication skills + working through the hard situations.
