Welcome to a series of short episodes where I answer "17 Questions That Changed My Life" from Tim Ferriss.
I journaled each morning on these questions and I am excited to share my answers with you and how I am applying them to my massage practice, business, and personal life. Today's question is, "What are the worst things that could happen? Could I get back here?" This is one of my favourites! Goal Setting? We get it! We love it! Then we Find excuses. The excuses are really just fear preventing us from taking risk- it's just trying to keep us safe. Enter Fear Setting thanks to Tim Ferriss. Check out the path that leads to overcoming your fears and crushing some seriously big goals. Get out a piece of paper and follow along below. If you play along and ponder these 17bquestions, I would love for you to share your answers with The Radical RMT community or send me a DM! Put this Fear/Goal at the top of your page. Example: Move abroad to work as a massage therapist. CREATE 3 COLUMNS On the same page below your listed fear make 3 columns FIRST COLUMN: LIST ALL THE WORST THINGS THAT COULD HAPPEN List at least ten of the worst things you think could happen around this fear. You want to go dark and deep here. You already have some ideas at the top of your mind likely stressing you out so get those on paper. Then think about what your most negative friend or family member might say to you? Write those down too. Example: Move abroad to work as a massage therapist. What if I don't make any money? What if my partner and I split up while abroad? What if I miss my family? What if I don't like it? What if I get hurt? What if I lose my registration? What if I can't sell/rent my house. What about hurricanes? Etc. SECOND COLUMN: WHAT COULD YOU DO TO MINIMIZE THE LIKELIHOOD OF THESE THINGS HAPPENING Now that we have gone to the darkest corners of our mind let's turn it around. Look at that list and now line by line give an example of what you could do to minimize the likelihood of that thing happening. Do it for every scenario. Example: What if I can't make a living as a massage therapist? Well, I've been doing pretty darn well as a massage therapist now and I know the action steps I took, the health professionals I aligned myself with, the networking I did, the community events etc. I could follow a similar game plan only now with the experience and proof to back it and this will help me have a busy schedule and earn income as a massage therapist abroad. THIRD COLUMN: IF IT HAPPENS WHAT COULD YOU DO TO REVERSE THE DAMAGE OR AT LEAST GET BACK ON YOUR FEET Let's say despite your best efforts you do not succeed. That's ok. It's ok to know when something isn't right for you and you do not have to push through to prove it to anyone, especially yourself. Everything is an opportunity to learn! So imagine that you have done this big thing and now you are either in a bit of a pickle, rock bottom, or pretty much back to where you started. What can you do to bring yourself out of it? Example: I fail as a massage therapist working abroad and I have little to no money. I would be able to move back to Ontario Canada and work as an RMT to earn money. If I couldn't afford a place to stay right away I could stay with friends or move back in with my family (to me this is my WORST case scenario, haha) but, you know what- I'm alive, healthy and I have a support network who would take me in. It gives me the opportunity to get back on my feet and re-create my life- and it could look different than when I left too! REALIZE IT'S DOABLE After completing this Fear Setting exercise you will have no concrete excuse to be fearful of this goal! What could happen is that you realize you don't want to pursue this goal after all and that's ok. Knowing what we don't want can bring us a lot more clarity to know what is worth pursuing. I'm a girl who was told by my grandma that I have magic hands and so I became a massage therapist. I love reading in bed, the combo of peanut butter and chocolate anything, and working from my laptop or phone with my dogs by my side. My mission? To help other massage therapists own their awesome and do what they love every darn day! Even if that love is not massage therapy.
